Important information about irritable Bowel Syndrome

Our doctor Dr. Konstantin Peysin tells you about this condition, let’s listen to him:

Dr. Peysin explaining about the irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS is a common medical condition that affects the large intestine causing: abdominal pain and a change in bowel habits. Other symptoms such as diarrhea, gas, and bloating can also be caused by IBS and can make IBS difficult to diagnose.

IBS rarely presents with severe symptoms and can often be treated through changes in lifestyle and diet. If you are experiencing severe symptoms, they can be treated through counseling and medication.

Symptoms

Varying types of IBS can be identified based on presented symptoms:

IBS with Constipation (IBS-C):

  • Difficulty having a bowel movement
  • The inability to have a bowel movement despite the need
  • Hard stools

IBS with Diarrhea (IBS-D)

  • Urgent need to use the bathroom
  • Cramping and stomach pain
  • Loose stools

It is possible to present with both IBS-C and IBS-D. IBS with Mixed bowel habits or IBS-M can cause you to experience both sets of symptoms simultaneously.

Both IBS-C and IBS-D may also cause other symptoms, such as:

  • Frequent Urination
  • Abdominal Pain and Cramping
  • Bloating and Gas
  • Bad Breath
  • Food Intolerance
  • Depression and Anxiety
  • Headache
  • Difficulty Sleeping and Fatigue

While remission is possible, it is often followed by flare-ups of worsening symptoms. Symptoms may be worsened due to alcohol consumption, certain foods, stress, and/or hormonal changes.

Causes of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

The precise causes of IBS are unknown. However, several explanations for the symptoms have been identified.

The likely cause for IBS can be found in the muscles of the large intestine. As these muscles contract, food is pushed through your digestive tract, and fluids and nutrients are absorbed by the body. Incorrect contractions, whether stronger or weaker, cause the varying IBS symptoms.

Other causes include:

  • Infection
  • Anomalies in your nervous system.
  • Inflammation in the intestines
  • Certain foods (dairy, chocolate, etc.)
  • Alcohol
  • Stress

Diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Unfortunately, there is no test that can accurately diagnose IBS. Therefore, one of our Triborough GI gastroenterologists will conduct a physical examination, take a complete medical history, and perform tests to rule out more severe conditions that may present similar symptoms.

Testing may include:

  • Colonoscopy – a small tube is used to examine the entire colon.
  • Flexible Sigmoidoscopy – the lower part of the colon is examined using a sigmoidoscope (a light flexible tube).
  • CT scan or X-ray – Images are taken of your pelvis and abdomen that, when examined by your doctor, may be used to rule out other causes of your symptoms.

If you are experiencing the symptoms listed above, we recommend that you keep a record of their frequency and length. This information may prove helpful in the diagnosis.

Treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Because there is currently no cure for IBS, treatment primarily focuses on relieving your symptoms. Your doctor at Triborough GI will help you determine which dietary changes you may need to make to improve your symptoms.

Limiting gas-producing foods, eliminating gluten from your diet, or following a special diet, such as a low-FODMAP diet that eliminates specific carbohydrates known to trigger IBS symptoms, are all possible recommendations that may be made by one of our physicians.

In addition to dietary changes, a variety of medications are available to help alleviate your symptoms. These include:

  • Anticholinergic medications (i.e. Atropen)
  • Antimotility medications (i.e. Imodium)
  • Antidepressant medications (i.e Cymbalta)
  • Fiber supplements
  • Laxatives

While there are several other medications that are specifically formulated to treat IBS, they are primarily used in severe cases that have not responded to other treatments.
