  • Vomiting

What is Gastritis?

Gastritis or upset stomach is a very common problem and is easy to treat. Many causes of gastritis are due to lifestyle. Drinking too much alcohol or caffeine, smoking, and eating spicy and acidic foods can cause gastritis. Medicines such as NSAIDs can cause gastritis. Trauma, stress and surgery as well as certain infections and diseases are other possible causes of Gastritis.

Our Staten Island, Bronx, or Brooklyn-based specialists can perform diagnostic gastritis procedures and treatments at any of our Triborough GI clinics.

One of our board-certified GI doctors will guide you through the procedure and provide advice and treatment for managing your symptoms.

Symptoms

Many people with gastritis have no symptoms at all. However, some people experience symptoms like:

  • Upper abdominal pain and cramps
  • Loss of appetite
  • Chest pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Bloating
  • Belching
  • Hiccups
  • Burning in the stomach
  • Acid taste in the mouth
  • Blood in vomit
  • Blood in stool

Causes

Gastritis can be caused by:

  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine
  • Smoking
  • Eating spicy food
  • Eating acidic food
  • NSAIDs
  • Stress
  • Trauma
  • Surgery
  • H. pylori

How is Gastritis diagnosed?

If you have symptoms of Gastritis, one of our Triborough GI doctors will collect a complete medical history and conduct a physical examination. You may also have to undergo several tests. The most common of these is an endoscopy with a biopsy of the stomach.

This procedure entails the use of a flexible lighted tube with a camera known as an endoscope. An endoscope is guided through the mouth and throat, into the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine. The doctor will look at these areas and may take tissue samples for testing.

Another test that may be conducted by your physician is an Upper GI Series, also known as a Barium Swallow. For this test, you will be asked to swallow a liquid that contains barium, making your digestive tract visible in an X-ray. X-ray images may show changes in your stomach lining such as ulcers.

Other tests such as blood tests, checking for H. pylori and anemia, and stool test, to check for blood, may be conducted as well.

How to treat Gastritis?

Gastritis is often treated with medications and lifestyle changes. This will help reduce stomach acid, relieve symptoms and heal the stomach lining. Avoid medication, food and drinks that irritate the stomach lining. If you have gastritis, make sure to avoid the following:

  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine
  • Spicy and acidic foods
  • Smoking

Medicines that block or reduce stomach acid to treat gastritis include:

  • Antacids
  • Histamine blockers
  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)
  • Surface agents

If gastritis is caused by an infection or illness such as H. pylori, immediate treatment for the cause is needed.

Speak with your healthcare provider about your symptoms. He/she will help you find the best treatments for your needs.
