Five things to know about your upper endoscopy procedure at Triborough GI

1. Upper endoscopy, also known as an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is a diagnostic procedure that allows our team to visually examine the upper gastrointestinal tract, including the stomach, esophagus, and duodenum.
2. An upper endoscopy may be recommended if you are experiencing symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, persistent heartburn or acid reflux, abdominal pain or discomfort, unexplained weight loss, or unusual changes in bowel movements. It can also diagnose conditions like ulcers, inflammation of the esophagus or stomach lining, and tumors.
3. Before the procedure, you will need to fast for a certain amount of time and avoid taking any medications that may interfere with the test. Our team at Triborough GI will provide specific instructions on how to prepare for your upper endoscopy.
4. During the procedure, you are given a local anesthetic to numb your throat and a sedative to help you relax. Our doctor will then gently insert a thin, flexible tube with a digital camera on the end through your mouth and into your esophagus, stomach, and first portion of the small intestine. The images captured by the camera are displayed on a monitor for our team to examine.
5. After the procedure, you may experience some mild discomfort or bloating. This is normal and should subside within a day or two. If a biopsy was taken during the procedure, you may also experience some minor bleeding, which is also normal. Results from the upper endoscopy will be shared with you, and any necessary follow-up appointments will be scheduled.
