Routine colonoscopy screenings, performed at intervals appropriate for your age and risk factors, have a profound and positive impact on the prevention of colorectal cancer. It’s important to know that early-stage (localized) colorectal cancers have a 5-year survival rate of 91%, compared to just 13% for advanced-stage cancers. The preparation required for this important procedure is a minor disruption when weighed against its significant benefits. Triborough GI is proud to provide patients from across the New York City area with five key facts and instructions to help you prepare for your screening appointment.
A colonoscopy uses specialized technology to examine your large bowel and the lowest part of your small bowel for polyps, cancers, and other abnormalities. For our specialists to clearly see and identify any potential issues, your bowels must be completely empty. This requires thorough bowel preparation, following the instructions provided to you.
You will cleanse your bowels using a special solution and other products as needed. Proper preparation allows us to detect potentially serious conditions that may require treatment—conditions that could go unnoticed without effective screening. Adhering to your personalized bowel prep instructions also reduces the risk of complications during the procedure. These steps ensure the most effective, safe, and comfortable screening experience.
You will be prescribed a specific bowel-cleansing solution tailored to your needs. Various options are available; some come pre-mixed, while others are in powder form and must be mixed with a clear liquid as directed. These solutions are designed to clear your system and prepare your body for screening.
Be sure to follow the mixing instructions carefully, and avoid adding any unapproved flavorings—especially those containing red or purple dyes. It is essential to drink the entire solution within the specified timeframe. When it comes to properly preparing and cleansing your bowels, there are no shortcuts.

New Patients: (718) 360-1632 | Existing Patients: (718) 292-3822Before you begin your bowel prep, gather the items you’ll need for both pre- and post-colonoscopy care. This includes plenty of extra-soft toilet paper, soothing ointments, and wet wipes. You should also stock up on clear liquids, as your intake will be limited to water, broth, and approved sports drinks during preparation. Don’t forget to add clear snacks to your shopping list—good options include Italian ice and certain popsicle flavors.
During preparation, you may be asked to discontinue certain supplements and medications or adjust their dosage. Likewise, we may prescribe specific medications to take in the days leading up to your appointment. You may also need to stock up on laxatives, enemas, or suppositories to help move and clean out your bowels. You’ll know the cleanse is working when your stool becomes clear.
Be kind to yourself. Set up a “Zen zone” (preferably near the bathroom) that feels soothing and is close to your most comfortable chair, complete with soft blankets and fluffy pillows. Aromatherapy and calming music are also great additions. It’s always best to go into a procedure with both your body and mind relaxed—and in good spirits.
