Specialists like our team at Triborough GI not only have considerable advanced and focused training and experience, but they also complement this expertise with state-of-the-art technologies. Patients at our offices are often surprised by just how far technology has come. We can see what’s happening inside your digestive system with a “camera pill” or capsule endoscopy. Our board-certified gastroenterologists are pleased to answer some of your common questions about this diagnostic technology, from exactly what it is to how long it will take.
We refer to it as a “camera pill” when explaining the process to our patients. With traditional endoscopy services, an endoscope or long, flexible, camera-equipped tube is inserted through the mouth. This allows us to see the digestive tract. The information is used to identify causes of concerning changes or symptoms and to make an accurate diagnosis. A correct understanding of the source or root cause of our patients’ distress is essential to developing effective treatment plans. With capsule endoscopy, our patients swallow a pill or capsule. This isn’t just any pill. The pill contains a tiny camera. Once swallowed, the camera will travel through your digestive system and take pictures of your GI tract. Eventually, it will be passed and eliminated safely from your body. The photos taken by the camera will also be reviewed and used to make a diagnosis.

Generally, you will receive a recording tool worn around your waist or across your shoulders with a strap. Special sensors will also be attached to your abdominal area. When worn as directed, this device will blink every time a picture is captured. You will return the device and associated sensors as advised by our team. From there, we use the recorder to download and review the images captured and saved during your capsule endoscopy screening. We will contact you with the results.
Our team at Triborough GI advises our patients to wear the recorder and sensors for approximately eight hours. We will provide guidance on the next steps, but generally, you will need to return the recording device to us. We can also assist with removing the sensors. The entire process should be comfortable. To ensure everything goes smoothly, following any instructions we provide regarding preparation for the capsule endoscopy is important.
In partnership with you, this service can provide great insights into potential conditions of the small intestine that may not be evaluated well with traditional upper endoscopy techniques—from inflammatory conditions like Crohn’s disease to certain polyps and cancers.
