Obesity is a risk factor for seemingly countless conditions, including many of the diseases treated right here at Triborough GI. There is no “silver bullet” regarding a medically supervised weight management program. One of our seven Board-certified gastroenterologists in Staten Island, the Bronx, Brooklyn, or Bushwick, New York, can advise on everything from medications and procedures to lifestyle. A nutritious diet and regular exercise are essential ingredients, as medications and other in-office services are not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle, nor are they appropriate for every patient cared for at our offices.
The American Gastroenterological Association encourages the public to use MyPlate, which is like an updated food pyramid version. Unlike a pyramid, MyPlate uses an image of a dinner plate to demonstrate how much you should eat daily from each type of food or food group. Half of your foods should be non-starchy veggies and fruits, whereas a quarter of your diet should comprise complex carbohydrates (grains). Protein accounts for another one-fourth of the MyPlate diet, while small amounts of dairy should also be incorporated. The AGA also promotes the Mediterranean diet.
While MyPlate is a fundamental way of looking at your day-to-day food choices, if you must follow a specific “regimen,” experts generally recommend exploring the way of eating based on the traditional cuisine of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Think of the flavors associated with Greek, Italian, Moroccan, and Spanish cuisine (among other fabulous options). Like the MyPlate fundamentals, this diet is heavy on fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and whole foods.

A few good options include leafy greens like spinach, Swiss chard, and collard greens, and red or orange chilis, sweet potatoes, squash, tomatoes, carrots, and bell peppers. While it is advised to limit added sugars, fruits are naturally sweet and nutritious, and you can never go wrong with colorful and flavorful apples, grapefruit, blueberries, and strawberries. When it comes to grains, stick to whole wheat products or think of brown-colored products, like brown rice instead of white rice or whole wheat bread instead of white bread.
The idea is to consume fewer processed foods that do not occur naturally. Let Mother Nature be your guide here. The Mediterranean diet lends itself well to whole food choices; options like almonds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts represent “good fats” and are protein-rich, natural, and whole foods. And, yes, not all fats are “bad.” The right fats help to keep the likes of cholesterol levels in check. As with most things in life, moderation is key. A diet that supports a sustained healthy weight is not just about the foods you eat but also how much you consume. We can advise on the right amounts of food based on factors such as your age and activity level. No two weight management programs at Triborough GI are the same.
