A colonoscopy is a procedure often performed to diagnose or screen for abnormalities within the colon. It involves the insertion of a long, flexible tube with a camera attached through the rectum and into the large intestine. The procedure is usually recommended for individuals over the age of 50 as part of routine colorectal cancer screenings. It can also be used to diagnose other conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease. If you have an upcoming colonoscopy scheduled at one of our four Triborough GI offices, you may have several questions about the procedure. Our team will walk you through what you can and cannot do before your colonoscopy so you are well-prepared for the procedure.
This will help clean out the colon, and the procedure will provide the insight our team needs to make a proper diagnosis of your condition. You will experience diarrhea within a few hours of starting this liquid, and this may continue until the time of your appointment.
Our team at Triborough GI will often suggest a clear liquid diet for one or two days before the procedure. This ensures the colon is completely clean and free of any obstructions, making it easier for them to get a clear view during the colonoscopy.
It is still very important to drink plenty of water before your colonoscopy appointment. This will help the medicated solution be effective and prevent dehydration.
Due to the sedation used during a colonoscopy, having someone drive you home is essential. This ensures your safety and allows you time to rest and recover from the procedure.
Inform your doctor of any and all medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter and herbal supplements. Some medicines may need to be stopped or adjusted before the colonoscopy, so following your doctor’s instructions closely is important.
On the day of your colonoscopy appointment, we recommend wearing loose and comfortable clothing that can be easily removed and put back on. You are given a hospital gown to wear during the procedure, so wearing something comfortable underneath can help you feel more at ease.
