Colonoscopies are essential screening procedures that help us at Triborough GI detect colon polyps and colorectal cancer early. As always, early detection supports prompt, non-traumatic, and effective treatment. While our teams across the greater New York area will thoroughly review what to expect before, during, and after your procedure, we’re also happy to provide a brief overview of the five key steps that contribute to a successful and comfortable screening — including whether you’ll be awake during your colonoscopy.
During your initial visit, we will advise you on any medications or supplements that should be discontinued or adjusted before your appointment. We may also provide guidance on medications that should be taken on the day of your procedure. It’s important to inform us if you are taking blood thinners or have any conditions that might cause bleeding or affect clotting. Additionally, let us know if you have any medical device implants (such as a pacemaker). These and other medical conditions may require special care and precautions prior to your screening.
During your consultation, our team will also provide instructions on what to eat and drink before your colonoscopy. This procedure typically involves a special preparation process known as a “bowel cleanse.” This includes drinking a bowel-cleansing solution at specific intervals before your appointment. As the name suggests, these solutions cleanse the colon. A clean colon allows our specialists to detect any polyps or abnormalities that may require immediate attention. A clear view of the colon supports an accurate diagnosis, which can lead to preventive measures against cancer or effective treatment of any cancerous growths. Following these instructions and properly cleansing your bowel reduces the risk of complications and promotes a safer, more comfortable experience. We may also advise you on consuming clear liquids, following special diets, and using enemas or suppositories, if appropriate.
Before your screening, our anesthesia provider will administer medications to prevent discomfort and help you relax. These medications may make you drowsy or cause you to fall fully asleep. We will discuss the different options for analgesics to manage pain and sedatives to ensure a comfortable screening experience.

New Patients: (718) 360-1632 | Existing Patients: (718) 292-3822We will begin the rectal exam only after your body is fully relaxed. A lubricated colonoscope—a long, thin, and flexible tube—is then gently inserted. This advanced instrument is equipped with a small camera and light, allowing us to view the entire large intestine. To expand the bowel for better visibility, air is introduced through the colonoscope.
If anything appears suspicious, a biopsy may be performed by removing a small tissue sample for further analysis. At this time, we can also remove any polyps using specialized tools and precise techniques. Because colonoscopies can vary from person to person, the total time required for your visit may differ.
You will rest in one of our recovery rooms as the medications administered for your comfort wear off. Once you are fully alert, one of our specialists or nurses will review the results of your colonoscopy with you. You will also receive recommendations for any additional care or treatment, if necessary. We may discuss when the results from any biopsied tissue will be available.
Just as we provided pre-screening instructions, we will review post-screening care with you and the individual accompanying you to your appointment. (You will need to arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home due to the lingering drowsiness caused by the medications administered before your screening.) It is essential to follow our instructions, including any activity or dietary restrictions specific to your situation.
